Abolish ICE, redux
Once again, and in solidarity with Los Angeles and many other American cities, local activists are protesting outside the ICE facility in Portland. They are hoping that more people will join them, though last night they learned to be careful what they ask for. A number of young people arrived with spray paint, sprayed “Fuck ICE” and other phrases on the outside of the building (see extra), and ran, leaving the more committed activists to face riot police who used tear gas and rubber bullets against them. Nevertheless, the activists were back today, including many I know well. (I am very carefully not making photos that include people who could be identified by agents of the State.)
Someone chalked on the sidewalk at the streetcar stop nearby: “ICE is arresting and deporting our neighbors. What are you going to do about it?” There are many who want to do something about it, though it is difficult to see what effective action looks like.
Seven years ago we held a meditation outside the same building, drawing in protesters who had not joined the action until then. I have been asked to organize meditations again, but I'm not feeling it. I'm turning eighty next month. It's time for younger people to take charge.
Backblipped Saturday/Sunday.
