How Many Owls Can You Find?
I spent a great afternoon at Blue Apple Farms, a local raptor rehab facility that operates in collaboration with Native Animal Rescue to help injured or abandoned birds find their way back to the wild. These Great Horned Owls will be released when they are able to fly and hunt on their own; in the meantime they live in a fabulous safe state of the art space as they are nurtured back to health. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife regulates avian rehab with strict rules regarding facilities and care; note that it is illegal to keep a wild creature without a permit, and Blue Apple plays it by the book when they treat their rotating population of hawks, falcons, ravens and crows. Blue Apple was born from one woman’s passion for birds; her enthusiasm is non-stop and inspiring. In addition to caring for raptors, the non-profit organization is developing an educational component and conducts ongoing adult art workshops and camps for children on the property. I came away in awe of what one person can do to make our world a better place. Check BlueAppleFarms (make sure to include the S at the end or you’ll end up on an equestrian site) on Instagram to learn more if you like.
