The last hours of the cactus flower

I suddenly noticed this flower on a cactus in the cabin, which I'd been neglecting for some time. As usual neglect can be good for some plants, rather than the heavy handed interference of a keen gardener. This flower  has a trumpet shape, is on a stem which is about six inches long, and the flower's diameter is about four inches.

I brought it in to the house as I knew the flower had only a few hours left. Their flowering period is very short, so here it is. I love them. My granny introduced me to cacti which she had growing in a glassed-in and very sunny verandah looking out over the Thames Estuary, at Southend-on-Sea in Essex, where I played for hours as small child in the 1950s.
