Great North Swim

Oh Lordy, I have never heard rain like it! It was torrential over night, it pounded all night and thunder and lightening lit up the sky and shook the night. We all met for breakfast and we were all trepidatious. At first the day looked promising, soon the rain clouds gathered and it fell in biblical amounts as we arrived at Brockhole.

We registered and picked up our timing chips and hats and sheltered from the deluge. A thunderstorm hit again and the wave of swimmers who had just entered the water were all evacuated. Then we all waited with fingers crossed that the storm would pass. It did! Hurrah.

Swimming started again as the rain stopped and blue patches winked through the clouds. There was a half hour delay but we got in. It wasn’t too choppy…..until we faced the turn at half way. Then waves did bash into me all the way back, but I got there.

I had booked to do the 250m with Ruth and Louise after my mile but because of the delayed start I’d only just got out and was feeling chilly so I left them to it.

This time last year the girls had not done any open water swimming, but we have been up on the moors and in the dock and today was a great challenge. It was a challenge that they smashed. We all proudly wore our t shirts and medals and we were buzzing. It was a fabulous adventure shared with such a lovely bunch of women. They are AMAZING!!!
