Red squirrels, route barré and a raccoon
Today was stunning—I’m really taken by the area. There’s much more of a mix of open areas and treed areas here so you get to see plenty of life going on. The cycle paths and roads have again been top notch and I think this route is probably my favourite so far.
I heard a black woodpecker, saw a couple of red squirrels scampering about and most surprising (for me) was seeing a raccoon sitting in the middle of the cycle path. Apparently, they were introduced in the 70s and are considered a pest but I’ve never seen one so this was pretty cool.
Eventually, I followed a road to Clervaux that kept reminding me I wasn’t going to make it because the road was closed. I decided I’d either get through on foot or just return down the same way given my loop back was only just on the other side of the hill anyway.
I got right to Clervaux and found a huge section of road dug up with no easy way through. But, I spotted a workman walking up and managed a bit of French and he pointed out a few flights of steps through a peculiar little cemetery on a hill and off I went. Sure enough, popped out on the road I needed and returned on the side I was hoping. It was so picturesque so I’m glad that worked out.
Rich has had his ‘best day of the trip so far’ back at the ranch which I think just means he was wasted and he needed the break, but the whole camping scene here is fantastic.
We played a couple of board games outside last night and plan a similar evening tonight. A good holiday feeling!
