Light evenings here
More light, less heat, than Bristol at the moment. Wearing a jumper, and a raincoat too some of the time. This is the view at the bottom of the path down from my friends’ house, at 10.15pm. The fishing boat is heading out to sea.
In the morning I walked clockwise on the coast path out of Stromness. Saw a seal, and lots of oystercatchers. Lots of starlings on the beach too, rummaging around in the seaweed. I didn’t know they did that!
Lunch with M at her house, then down to the Pier Arts Centre where we looked at an exhibition of art by some Ukrainian women who came to Orkney as refugees when Russia invaded. I’ve put one of them in the extras. They each wrote a page about their experiences too, speaking of the kindness and welcome they have found here, the fear for their families and homeland, the missing home.
Went on then to a cafe and a good long catch up about life, hopes, problems, ideas. And nice cake:) Early evening I went back to M’s house to eat, then we walked down to the ferry terminal to watch the Hamnavoe appear from the south, dwarfing all the Stromness houses as it moved slowly towards the dock. M’s partner F was on it - doing the exact same journey as me, but 24 hours later, having been in London and Wiltshire visiting family. M had brought a red t shirt (stand in for a flag) which we waved like mad, and fortunately F saw us from an high up deck, and waved back. She was very tired, so I went back briefly with them, to hear the news and catch up a bit. Then a lovely light walk home, sunset was 10.45
