Mangroves at night

We had a bad breakfast in the hotel, or rather took a bit of fruit and added it to the yoghurt we brought with us. Then set out to pick up a few things as I decided I needed a cheap bag to sacrifice to the beaches.  Key West is very expensive and the shops are no good but I found one stall selling kind of hippy bags and I bought the least horrid.  We also bought coverups for our kayak trip.

Then we went to the Hemingway house museum which was over crowded and over managed by a shrieking irritating guide.  Hard to get a take on him actually living there despite all the photos. I have started To Have and Have Not which, despite the eye-wateringly racist language, gives a strong flavour of the man.

We had a late lunch in an indifferent and grumpy sushi restaurant.

Hannah and Alexander went off swimming and V had a nap so I sat and finished my previous book,  a period detective novel I was reading for work.

In the evening was the big event of the day, we went kayaking around the mangrove swamps from sunset into night.  I hadn’t kayaked for some time but got into the swing as we drifted across the bay. The first foray into the mangroves was narrow and hard to navigate but he encouraged us to pull ourselves through on the roots.  On the other side we watched the sunset for a bit in a welcome breeze (kept the mozzies away) before going back in on a wider channel. We saw more fish and tree crabs and jelly fish that time.   And I got massively bitten despite all the preventative spray.  Chad our guide was a silent persona until he started talking about the wildlife and environment then he lit up. In fact like a cork out of a bottle he then talked all the way back to our B&B.
