The rising of the sun
Yes dear reader, this was around 5.30am as I set off on the second round of bird recording on my patch near Skibbereen. A beautiful sun rise and the local birds already in full throat. I thought I would practise my talk as I travelled - I'm so entertaining and word perfect on my own! What an eejit, I landed up in Dunmanway rather than Skib, having forgotten to turn off the main road! This added a good 45 minutes to my journey, a good job I'd started off extra early.
Eventually arriving in the right place, it was a beautiful morning, and the willow warblers, chiff chaff and blackbirds were in fine form. I reckon I identified 28 different varieties of birds, only one robin though and no choughs this time, The highlight was a gang of four greater whitethroats - incredibly loud and warbly and flying all over the place. I also saw a hare scramble over a wall, a skinny black cat, some wee calves and two hairy horses and the back ends of the cows ambling up the road to be milked.
The talk has been send off via WeTransfer - I just hope I can be as riveting on the day as I was in the car.
