Fennel...Yum!

An Eastern Black Swallowtail butterfly caterpillar chowing down on some fennel. The photo on the middle left side shows the cat's 'osmeterium' which, when extended, looks to me like a set of bright orange antlers. (I gently tickled this one to get the shot) The osmeterium is a specialized defense organ found on all swallowtail caterpillars. It's a gland that can be pushed out when it feels threatened. It also releases a 'stinky' odor to ward off predators. But since I have a very, very poor sense of smell, thanks to Covid, I can't share more about that.
If you aren't already, you might consider planting butterfly larval plants in your space. Just check on line for who likes what. The butterflies and I  thank you.  m
