I had a day out in the smoke to meet up with 2 friends I’ve known for 25 years since we all lived in Belgium together . It was a great catch up having not seen each other for about 18months!

The train journey down was packed; the Ascot goers piling on in heels and hats braying loudly until Reading. Luckily I had a seat. :)

The journey back was delayed: I’d rushed to catch the 16:58 so had to upgrade my off peak but we only got as far as Acton before having to return to Paddington due to a trackside fire. We sat in Paddington for about 50 minutes before setting off again but due to various delays along the way arrived back 78 minutes late… compensation incoming. GWE pays out over £1million pounds a month on average in compensation. Not their fault this time, but symptomatic of the railway system?
