Bringing Home the Catch
The ‘Welcome Home’ fishing boat comes into harbour with a gaggle of line fishermen and their catch. It is a bit blowy today with gusts of 37mph and the outing was abandoned early because the sea was so rough, not early enough though for this unfortunate Ling which posthumously figures in my blip.
With the wind making it feel like a temperature well below10°, the sea almost felt warm as we struggled
against bouncy waves at our 10am swim. I find it hard to believe that there is a heatwave on the go down south. The fact that it’s not raining here is our bonus.
Once showered and pomaded, I swithered about going out down the street in the wind for a coffee, but I did go and got one at Flori’s . The thing about Flori’s café is that it is tiny, 8 people is a crush, so unless you want to sit silent on your own and listen to other people’s conversations you really have to chat to strangers. That is not something that I, an Edinburgher born and bred, was brought up to do. Rather the reverse . We regarded people who talked to us at a bus stop as being suspicious and best avoided , although it has changed a bit recently.
In Glasgow as a contrast, if you don’t talk to people in the bus queue, you are regarded with suspicion and best avoided. Anyway I did initiate a conversation with the couple across the table, even if it was only to allow me to raise my eyes from my cup ,they were that close.
The Saturday papers should be in soon, 2pm or thereabouts, and I will stravaig once more down the street to buy one. The town is overly busy today with the big cruise ship in Kirkwall disgorging its cargo throughout the island.
My Selkie ladies who are walking the solstice Midnight Walk are harbouring their energies this afternoon. I wish them all a fun filled, blister free 14miles. I look forward to hearing about it all tomorrow.
