James Douglas Earl of Angus

Here at Douglas on 14th May 1689 James Douglas formed the Cameronian Regiment. As the regiment’s first Colonel the statue depicts Douglas pointing to the surrounding hills where he would raise so many loyal men.

Douglas died 3 years later at the Battle of Steinkirk (Flanders). The Cameronians went on to serve in every major campaign of the British Army for 279 years.

Also on this spot the Regiment was disbanded and its flag lowered for the last time on 14 May 1968.
