Polytunnels
These are not just any nectarines, they are Selkie Penny and Aidan’s nectarines and this is not any old polytunnel, no this is Selkie Penny and Aiden’s deluxe polytunnel. If you live in Orkney rather than the Med you can still eat nectarines and cherries off your own little trees if you own one of those shelters.
I was invited for coffee this morning to taste a slice of their homemade cherry cake made with their very own cherries. It was very delicious and awarded a * rating. I eyed these ripening nectarines in the photo in the hope that they start falling of the branches sooner rather than later.
Poly tunnels are the way to go in Orkney when the weather can be harsh for cultivating fruit and vegetables other than the old familiars like potatoes, turnips and cabbage. Already another Selkie has one being erected in their garden.
Before the coffee morning, I had another rainy shuffle along to the slip. Once upon a time and certainly in Edinburgh I would have cancelled a trip beachward in the rain. No longer, life’s too short, although it’s still a challenge to dress quickly enough not to get just as wet as if in the water. The difference is that I get a run home from one or another of the very kind selkies who goes out of their way to land me at my door. They are the nicest group of ladies that I could wish to be among.
Forget any heatwave there might be down south, here we have a pleasant temperature of 17° but no sun.
My Elgin family are travelling up on the ferry from Scrabster tomorrow morning for the weekend. Strong winds are forecast so I hope the sea is not too rough for them. I messaged Alasdair to bring up cold water gear with them and he messaged back ………what? a defibrillator ??
