Sark
“You can lead a horse to water, but a pencil must be lead.”

I could get used to this. Cooked breakfast to start the day followed by a leisurely stroll down into St Peter Port to get the 10.15am ferry to Sark. No buses, no cars, although we did take advantage of the tractor ‘bus’ up to the village above the quay. We had a few hours (about four) walking around the island planned so no point in tiring ourselves on the steep uphill. Such a beautiful place to wander, we headed straight for La Coupee, the isthmus connecting Little Sark to Big Sark – railings both sides make it less intimidating than it once was to cross, especially on a windy day. A stop at Caragh Chocolates on the way back was a necessity, if only for the free banana cake advertised (the ice cream and cold drink also helped). The coastal scenery is of course beautiful and dramatic in places, the pace so laid back it’s impossible to rush. Even at my relaxed pace we made it to the Pilcher Monument and through La Moinerie Village to the Window in the Rock before heading back along the dusty lanes past La Seigneurie – the gardens will have to wait for another visit. Another stop for refreshment and we were still back at The Avenue to get the tractor ‘bus’ down to the quay for our return ferry. We found Christie’s, just opposite the quay, for our farewell meal on what was supposed to be our last day on Guernsey.
