A lazy day today…
So I’ve photographed the envelopes my cousin sent to himself and then sent them on to me when he was back in the accessible world!
Charlie had been in the SAS before he joined the Antarctic expeditions. The first was in the International Geophysical Year 1956/57 and his party of 10 set up the UKs first research station in Antarctica. In all he spent 3 full years in Antarctica.; though not consecutive years. He was the radio operator and chef and I had a copy of their Christmas Day dinner in that first year.it certainly looked yummy!
I hadn’t realised until today that the first Russian Sputnik was part of this International Geophysical Year investigating global warming.
And an interesting fact for today is that it’s 59 years since Barclaycard was born in UK. I was a Barclays customer so received one of the first cards but it was months before I managed to find a shop in Guernsey that would accept it! How things have changed. It certainly wasn’t a flash in the pan. Which is my saying for today…
The term 'flash in the pan' originated sometime during the late 17th century, when flintlock muskets were used. An attempt to fire a musket that resulted in gunpowder flaring up but no ball firing was referred to as a flash in the pan.
