Choo-Choo !
There was a steam locomotive heading up to Carlisle and then down the Cumbrian Coast line.
An opportunity to revisit our old stomping ground -Whitehaven.
The weather in Penrith was dull but warm, 30mins west to Keswick it was cloud/mist and pouring down, 30mins further west to Whitehaven it was dry but overcast with a cold wind..
I was in a bit of a rush to get up the footpath to Parton, on the way I was aware of some raptors calling up on the sandstone cliff but had no time to investigate.
I didn't quite make my favoured spot when I saw smoke from the locomotive rounding the headland so pitched up and watched as it approached Parton around the bends. Within a minute 60163 - Tornado was out of Parton towards Whitehaven. I wasn't too happy with the results but decided to blip this one showing the coastal environment.
On the way back we studied the cliff hoping to identify the calls we had heard earlier. Soon enough we were joined by two kestrels hunting along the cliff face and evidently there was a nest with juveniles up there somewhere.
Second extra is an Oystercatcher on a nest, confident in her safety on the opposite bank of the rail line.
A brief look in around Whitehaven, nothing has changed in the 6 months we have left, the harbour water is still orange the people are still friendly, the weather is wild and the place is a bit of a mess...
