A fine selection of footwear on display
Up early, as I had to drive Mrs. Ottawacker to her brother’s place in Kanata for 8.30, from where they would leave to spend what would be “definitely, absolutely, 100%” the last weekend cleaning their father’s house before the sale. Having already seen this movie, I am not holding my breath. Got there early, and was contemplating a quick stop to do some groceries before returning to Ottawa and taking Ottawacker Jr. for breakfast. Decided against it – which turned out to be the right move as Mitch had called while I was out and told us he was popping over. We arranged to meet at Allô Mon Coco at Billings Bridge.
And a lovely breakfast it was too. Mitch was on good form and had, for once, decided to shave. The dramatic difference in his face was not the main shock though: it was the selection of footwear the boys were raining. Honestly, I’m almost contemplating having to start dressing Ottawacker Jr. again – we allowed him to choose his own clothes once he hit four – but if this is what the kids these days are wearing… my God. Admittedly, we have just had the monsoon post-heatwave, but even so, shorts and boots… he looked like a slightly unstylish farmhand. And as for his godfather… trackpants and flip-flops. Canada, never change.
The rest of the day was essentially a blur. Ottawacker Jr. went out on a bus ride, I did some work, and mid-afternoon, I realised I had no lettuce for dinner. We made a quick stop at Loblaws, which turned into an “I have never had sushi, dad, what is it like” moment. Loblaws has a sushi stand in the South Keys supermarket, so try it he did. And, predictably, he hated it. This meant I had to eat his as well. Fortunately, he had the left-over pizza from the night before.
In the evening, we settled down to watch Flash Gordon, which I had on DVD. My God, special effects have definitely improved over the last 40 years. I was delighted, however, to note that my impression of Brian Blessed is still as effective today as it was then.
