A protective mum

A bit of a saga today. We planned to travel back to Cardiff this morning. We had the car serviced on Thursday in the main dealer a few hundred yards away and we hadn't used the car since picking it up. This morning I went to load up the car but found I couldn't unlock it. My first thought was that the battery in the fob was flat. I changed it but still the car wouldn't open. Not having encountered this problem before a quick search of the internet showed me how to use the physical key to open the door but having done so I still was unable to start the car using the fob in close proximity to the receiver. The only conclusion was that the fault must be the car electronics and I thought most likely it was a flat battery. Fortunately, I have complimentary Volvo roadside assistance and when I contacted them they promised to get a mechanic to me in about 2 hours. When he arrived he checked the battery and sure enough it was flat as a pancake. We concluded that the reason was that the garage had left the parking side lights on (something I never use and hadn't checked when I picked up the car). Problem solved and he used his jump leads to start the car and the 2h drive back to Cardiff recharged the battery. So, all's well that ends well.
While waiting the mechanic we wandered up the river where there were several families of ducks. This mum was diligently guarding her six chicks.
