Breakfast: Main Course...
This colorful, native Mabel Orchard Orb Weaver (Leucauge argyrobapta)aka 'Mabel's Orchard Orb Weaver', had successfully snared a Long-legged Fly. She was busy making sure that the fly was secure but still alive and would later provide her with a nourishing meal.
Orb Weavers are found in the southern U.S., Mexico and Brazil. They aren't considered a threat to humans although they can bite, but seldom do They dine on pest insects such as flies, ants and mosquitoes. Female Orb Weavers have a lifespan of 12 months and mate once in their lives. Males mate more often. I also saw in several references that adult females can actively change color. Cool! Right? m
