The Little Man...at The Grand
We have several "semi-famous" places in Michigan, among them being Frankenmuth, Mackinaw City, Mackinac Island, and the Mackinac Bridge, which connects our Lower Peninsula to the Upper Peninsula.
Son Jeff (who must have taken the picture) and his bride Heather and his boy Beckett are spending 2 nights at the Grand Hotel, which is on Mackinac Island. It is in the background. At one time, it boasted of having the longest porch in the world. Back in the old days, just anyone (read me) could walk up to the porch and sit in a white rocking chair, but not anymore. It now costs 12 dollars for adults and 6 dollars for kids. JUST TO GET ON THE PORCH AND TO BE IN THE COMMON AREAS!
The hotel is also famous for being featured in the 1980 movie Somewhere in Time, starring Cristopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. If you haven't seen it, check it out. Pretty good.
In the movie, Richard Collier (Reeve) had a convertible, and drove up to the hotel. NO! NO! NO! No cars are allowed on the island, with people walking, bike riding, or getting a ride in a horse-drawn carriage. Kind of nice walking in the middle of Main Street, only watching out for the horse droppings you might step in.
Lisa and I are going to join them on Wednesday for a couple of days, not over to the island, but in Mackinaw City. Looking forward to the visit and perhaps having a pasty.
