They Were Dye-ing To Get In!
Friend and fabric artist SLG hosted a small art making group at her wonderful outdoor studio—we spent the day dyeing various pieces of clothing: mostly scarves and shirts. Some folks used blanks—white items made for dyeing, and some people brought old clothes that needed a makeover. The patterned piece on the left was a pale yellow tank top from a thrift store; the scarf and T-shirt were purchased blanks; the plaid shirt was a tired wardrobe item that had been sitting at the back of someone’s closet. Each person worked with a five gallon bucket and the dye of their choice. Lots of mixing, stirring, rinsing, mixing, stirring, waiting, chatting, snacking and delight in our finished products. We all have ideas for the next time we can get together and play—there are so many ways to prep and tie and bunch up the fabric to make designs and patterns, and so many colors, and so many ways to combine all of it.
