Calanais

Today we went to Calanais (main blip), somewhere I have wanted to visit for years. And it was worth the wait! There are many other stone circles and standing stones in the area around, so we walked to two (Calanais II and III). Even more exciting for me is the Calanais II is also the location of a possible Neolithic timber circle, which probably pre-dated the stone circle. Timber circles formed part of my PhD so I'd read about this site but never visited before.

After lunch by these stone circles we drove to Great Bernera for a quick cuppa in the community cafe and then onto Bosta beach. At the beach there is a reconstructed Iron Age roundhouse (extra), which we visited and the beach itself is just spectacular (extra). We spent some time on the beach before heading to Stornoway for dinner.
