Back to the Grange

Blistering hot day…
I worked at home in the morning and then set off around lunchtime to friends in Winchester.  I decided to go by train and had to take on the most elaborate hopscotch of trains,  cancelled, stopping short, delayed before arriving at my destination bang on time.

We all met at Catherine’s house and got dressed up an evening of country house opera. Lovely drive over to the house, with everything glimmering in the sunshine  The theatre had mild air con but it was still absolutely sweltering. The first half was challenging (Les Indes by Rameau) as I made the mistake of trying to make some kind of sense of it. It was a production that had come via Paris Opera where they’d been on a stage that was twice the size so the much heralded break dancers were severely curtailed.

Dinner, brought by Catherine and Miriam was delicious and we drank some lovely wines and do you know, the second half was much more fun.  Even the breakdancing broke out.

This picture was taken as the crowds drifted home and the light was golden. One highlight was that one of our party pointed out a cuckoo flying low over the surrounding fields. I wouldn’t known what to look for but he did.  They a really are quite large! It was a beautiful sight.

We went back to Catherine and Jon’s for a nightcap in their lovely walled garden, the warmth making it feel as if were in Italy.

I stayed overnight at MIriam and Jonty’s though so we headed off there at around midnight.
