Bizarre

I had an interesting day.

About 9.30 I had to leave the office due to a security issue, expecting to be able to return about an hour later. I went for a coffee at the nearby theatre's cafe.

It is a pleasant place (see Blip) and the staff are too. I must go there more often. It happens to be across the street (literally) from the lump of cement which the King was due to unveil at 11am.

The theatre was full of police. Then the press arrived. Then the police went out to do their bit. The press followed soon after.

As 10.30 approached I was told the office was still off limits, so curiosity took me outside to view the developing pantomime. Ruritania comes to Kirkcaldy...

I have never been to something like that before. It is just bizarre. Anyway, the area reserved for republican protesters was at the front door of the theatre, so I joined in.

The best bit was when the guy next to me pointed out a royalist spectator in the crowd, who has a conviction for fundraising for the Ulster Volunteer Force during the violence in the north of Ireland. From time to time he would look our way with a murderous expression on his face.

We agreed that next time we would both give him the biggest, sweetest smiles we could manage. It was wonderful. I thought he was going to self combust.

I got bored long before the pantomime kicked off in earnest, and went back to work.
