Scoots, Shoots & Leaves

Weekly pop-up protest

A couple dozen folks in our neighborhood have been doing Unhappy Hour protests on a busy street here in Portland every Friday. We gather around 4:30 and stay for an hour. Sometimes we chant and sing and ring bells. Signs reflect the issue du jour - Musk figured prominently the first few weeks, then Hands Off, then NO KINGS, Now ICE and the big ugly bill are taking center stage. (My sign read SHAME on REPUBLICANS.) We get a lot of positive responses - honking, waving, peace signs, along with the very occasional one-finger salute.

It feels good to be among like-minded people, even if we're a small group. It does grow every week though. And I know there are thousands of similar rallies happening all over the country. Most of us have a feeling of having to do something. It's a bit like water dripping on a stone - eventually the stone gets worn down.

Our friends across the pond will appreciate the hat a guy walking by wore - it was the dreaded red baseball cap but the message said "Make America Great Britain Again."
