To honour sailors . . .
My first full day in Helsinki and I wandered to the waterfront to follow the coastal path that wraps around part of the city.
This magnificent sculpture came into view. Designed by sculptor Oskari Jauhiainen and architect Eero Eerikäinen, it was erected in 1968. It honours Finnish sailors and more recently has become a memorial for those who have died and remain at sea.
It certainly creates an extraordinary presence in its spot beside the coast in a downtown part of the city.
