Sexless reproduction
Ferns can reproduce asexually using spores formed in sporangia. In most ferns the sporangia develop underneath the normal photosynthetic leaves. In some, however, the sporangia are produced by highly modified leaves whose only function is reproduction. The Royal Fern Osmunda regalis, also known as the bog onion, is such a fern. The name Osmunda is said to derive from Osmunder, a Saxon name for the weather god Thor.
The oldest known fossils of Osmunda date back to the Paleocene which lasted from 66 million to 56 million years ago.
Given that the Royal Fern breeds asexually you might be interested to learn that you can use it to make a love potion! You can hear all about it here!
