Visby
Steinbock_Travels day 13
Our motorhome parking space beneath the harbour wall was a great place to say only 5 minutes away from the ferry, and 5 mins walk to the bottom of the city, Visby. We just missed the walking tour of the city, but decided to walk around the walls, the oldest preserved town wall in Northern Europe, which was built in 1250. Originally 3.4 km long, and up to 9 m high, the 24 towers were added at a later date. It is a UNESCO listed world heritage site.
What an amazing walk, sometimes outside the walls, sometimes inside. so many cause little wooden houses on the inside, every house had rises planted outside, so beautiful and fragrant.
We had a look around some of the nice shops, then had a really good cappuccino, and headed back to the truck for some lunch, and Mr S to have his afternoon snooze. In the afternoon we went to the fantastic Visby museum, where the Highlight was the Viking hoard, the Spillings hoard from 1999, 67kg of silver treasure, 14,295 coins mainly Islamic dirhams from 539 to 870. Plus lots of jewelry.
We went for an absolutely delicious Chinese dinner at Surfers. Back at the truck the wind had freshened, and were treated to the most amazing sunset, with breakers coming over the seawall.
