Civitella

In 2001, the little hilltop town of Civitella near Arezzo renamed one of its streets in honour of a captain in the 8th British Army who help the town's inhabitants after a massacre. Captain Morgan and his colleagues arrived in Civitella in 1944 just days after the retreating German army had executed all the men and boys of the town and surrounding villages, over 250 souls in all, in reprisal for the murder of 3 German officers. This part of Italy is full of similar stories as the Germans fought every inch of their retreat and Italy descended into civil war. You would never guess its history today in its peaceful and beautiful medieval streets...
