Memorials

Today it was my turn to lead our local walking group. We tackled the twin peaks of Brown Clee Hill passing the isolated memorial to Allied and German airmen who died on the hill during the Second World War. Brown Clee has the dubious distinction of being the hill that more aircraft (19) crashed into than any other in England. It was a delightful walk, ten species of butterfly, several dragonflies and superb views.

Twenty years ago today I made a very different walk, along dark tunnels and up seemingly endless stairways as we were evacuated from Edgware Tube station. A split-second decision and I could have been standing in a different carriage. I don't think about it often but today it was hard to ignore.
