Shadows on the Shade

Both those words are sombra in Portuguese, and I've had to think about the difference between them when teaching English - how would you describe the difference?

Mike pegs our towels up on the porch to shade the door from the morning sun when it's this hot.

Feeling quite fed up with the heat, and how it curtails what we can do, and disturbs our sleep - we wait for bed until it cools off a bit around midnight, but it's still too hot to be comfortable. Also, a couple of wildfires fairly near today, the larger one still not under control - 308 firefighters, 102 vehicles, 8 aerial resources since 9am this morning...
