Chocolate, Beetroot and Tomatoes

These summer days have such a different feeling to those in winter. I was up at 6am and drinking tea in the garden. It was still quiet, slightly cool and damp, and the birds were singing.

Volunteering today and I spent quite a time communing with these tomato plants, trimming out side shoots and securing supports - the plants are heavy with fruit now. It was hot and humid in the poly tunnel so much so the cool 22 degrees outside felt like air conditioning. We had nearly a full complement of us Tuesday volunteers today so there was lots of interesting conversation over tea and cake (dark chocolate and beetroot cup cakes). More widely in the site today was a group of 45 school children learning about growing and wildlife, and a group of local businesses discussing their sustainability practices.

By the time I’d returned home and eaten a late lunch the afternoon was slipping away. I rested with some word puzzles, watched Wimbledon and walked Merlin.

And so another summer’s day draws to a close.
