Pannerden
The Rhine Cycle Path, Day Ten:
Xanten to Arnhem. Round the Lakes outside Xanten and off along the Dyke, after breakfasting on cheese croissants in the Town Square, where we had a great view until a chirpy market trader pulled his trailer up in front of our bench! We went past Wonderland, at Kalkar – a nuclear reactor that failed to go into commission after Chernobyl and was later converted into an amusement park – and the old iron bridge at Salmorth and then crossed into Holland and stopped for posh ice creams at Klever before catching the ferry across the River at Millingen. After that we continued on past some rather cool rusting factory buildings at Pannerden amd a rather good, rugged sculpture of a mammoth at Groessen (I may begin proceedings to try and get it officially twinned with the Hoveringham Mammoth.) Our hotel at Arnhem – The Haarhuis – was really nice. We checked in, had a wander around, visited the Eusebio Kirk and sat in a shady square, drinking cassis. Later on we found an Indonesian restaurant and indulged in the full Veggie Banquet Set Meal for Two…
