Out and About

Kirkconnel old churchyard

En route to Edinburgh we took a detour just north of Gretna to take a peek at Bonshaw Tower the home of Clan Irving. Mr P's mother was an Irving. We were waylaid by an eccentric local Irving and historian who insisted on taking us to a nearby old churchyard where Fair Helen of Kirkconnel is buried. Helen was an Irving who, sometime in the 1500s was shot by mistake by a jealous lover aiming for her boyfriend.  Walter Scott wrote a ballard about the story. That's her grave and the grave of her boyfriend behind the plaque.
