We Brake for Turtles
I was going to post about the Bluebirds and their big decision over which house to choose now that there are two empty ones. But this is better.
We were on our way to dinner when we spotted a turtle in the middle of the road, presumably on its way from the lake to the creek. This happens fairly often and I would normally pick up the turtle and help it off the road. Squashed turtles are too common a sight, sad to say. But it was not the usual Painted Turtle this time, but a smallish Snapping Turtle, a species notorious for its ability to extend its snake-like neck and clamp its jaws on the hand of anyone foolish enough to pick it up. This turtle was on its own.
So I took a few photos - it was remarkably docile - and left it to it own devices. I was very pleased to find, on our return, no flattened turtle, so it didn't need my help at all.
