Bastille Day in Lantheuil
It's Bastille Day today, the national day of France, and a holiday for most people here in Normandy. Some of the local shops were open until noon (like the one we frequent in Thue et Mue, where I snapped the extra photo) and a communal picnic party had been advertised on a flyer posted on the village advertisement board.
I was curious to see what this entailed and took a walk to the village hall with my mother in the afternoon. In the garden behind "salle des fêtes" a big party tent had been erected with tables and chairs inside for guests and a band was playing. Two big BBQ's stood hot and ready to the side for people to cook their meat or sausages (I'm guessing) and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves with food and drink while listening to the music.
While we stood there for a moment listening to the band, a lovely woman came to chat and tried to ask in a very broken English if we were staying in Lantheuil for a holiday and for how long? We tried to answer and she seemed to understand we were from Iceland and staying in the village for two weeks. She said we were welcome to come and sit in the tent, but I didn't really feel like staying for long and at that moment it had also started to rain so we just smiled and thanked her and walked back "home".
