Fife Coastal Path day 2
Today Mr P walked from Dalgety Bay to Leven, 36km in a lot of rain
I visited ruined chapels , ruined castles, tiny harbours , caves, villages and sat in cafes sheltering from the rain. Full waterproofs were the name of the day.
The Blip is Doo Cave on Wemyss Beach, used as a dovecot in the Middle Ages, with holes carved for the birds.
The collage in extras, from top left, shows Macduff castle , the home of Burntisland’s famous daughter**, the graveyard at the ruined St Bridget's Kirk, the harbour at Dysart and a sculpture at Dysart.
**The house in Burntisland is linked to Mary Somerville. Mary lived there as a child and had a minimal education. She was taught to read (but not write) by her mother. When she was 10 years old, she attended a boarding school for girls for a year in Musselburgh. Upon her return home, she began to educate herself from the family library. She was encouraged only by an uncle who helped her with Latin. Mary was self-taught and became a mathematician, astrologer and author. Not only was the street and square named in her honour, Somerville College in Oxford also bore her name.
