The Romney Marsh Churches
The Romney Marsh Churches in Kent are somewhere I have wanted to visit for a long time-and now here we are.
We have hired bikes for 2 days and picked them up this morning. I have always liked the bleak, isolation of marshland, and we all found it a perfect place to cycle around. We visited 5 Churches, and found Saint Thomas Becket in Fairfield to be outstanding. We however enjoyed all the Churches, Saint Augustine in the extras has an unusual, separate belfry which was built like this as the marshes couldn't support such a heavy structure.
There were lots of lovely moments with church kittens, a marvellously decorated 12th century lead font, a great act of kindness-which helped us out, handing over of keys and more.
In the evening there was a bell ringing practice in the church was are staying 2 minutes from. At 8.30pm M and I climbed the bell tower to watch the bell ringers. We had noticed a tiny notice on the outside door which said visitors were welcome, and they very much were!
