a lifetime burning

Bee Wolf

This incuous looking fellow, that I initially thought might have been a hoverfly, turned out on closed inspection to be the European Bee Wolf.  It is a bee-killer or bee-eating solitary wasp.

This next bit is a bit gruesome, so perhaps best to skip it, if you are of a delicate disposition.  Although the adults feed on nectar and pollen, the inseminated adult females capture honey bees which they take back to their nests and on which they lay their eggs on, using them as a food source for their own grubs when they hatch.
