Life's Little Moments

Wavy Mucksucker

Yes, that is the actual common name of this little hoverfly.  The scientific name is Orthonevra nitida, but I think in this instance I much prefer the common name.  The "wavy" part of the name is fairly obvious when you notice the wild, wavy patterns in the eyes.  The "mucksucker" part of the name refers, I believe, to the larval form of this fly which feeds on decaying plant matter and waste materials of other insects, especially ants.  The adults feed on nectar, as seen here.  Anyway, this is a new find for me in my garden.

It's gorgeous out today, thin overcast, warm temps and lower humidity.  Very pleasant to be outside so that is where I've been most of the morning, other than a quick trip to drop off two matted prints that I am entering in this year's state fair.

Hubs is off to a karate event this afternoon so Jax and I will potter around here.  This evening we are planning to go to a local farm that makes wood fired pizzas using all locally sourced ingredients.  And perhaps some of their farm-made ice cream for desert (honey lavendar is sounding very tempting).
