Squash Blossoms
These beautiful squash blossoms carefully tied in little bundles caught my eye at the farmers' market this morning. I'm wishing I'd bought some, just to support the sweet Hispanic couple who run this stand, even though the chance of stuffing and frying them as they do in Italy would be little to none! We did buy a lovely cauliflower.
While I carry on with my quilt block obsession, John has built quite an elegant green bean support structure and planted twelve plants. If they all grow and produce we may find ourselves behind a table at the farmers' market. While I create blocks, some made up of I" squares, I've been listening to The Demon of Unrest: A Saga of Hubris, Heartbreak and Heroism at the Dawn of the Civil War, by Eric Larson. It's about the period immediately preceding the Civil War--'a period marked by tragic errors and miscommunications, inflamed egos and craven ambitions, personal tragedies and betrayals.' The author reads the prologue in which he likens the times to the period leading up to Trump's insurrection of January 6, 2021, and cautions his readers that over 750,000 Americans were killed in the Civil War.
It is both a well-told story and a cautionary tale. There have probably been hundreds of books written about the Civil War, but not so many that recount the times just before it. There are enough similarities to what is happening here now to make it quite a suspenseful story. I hope we can continue the similarities with some heroism. I'm done with hubris and heartbreak...
