RAF C-17 Globemaster III descends through cloud

I heard the noise, which I knew from experience indicated a large military plane, and looked upwards. At first I saw nothing obvious as the cloud cover was thick and low. Then this plane appeared between slightly less thick cloud banks, then disappeared again before emerging so that it was clear enough to focus on.

As it descended it banked quite steeply which suggests that it is on a path tow land at RAF Fairford. That is slightly misleading as it is currently a shared base between the RAF and the US Air Force. As it was higher than other military planes making a similar approach I thought it would be an RAf Airbus. but now I've looked at it more closely I realised it had jet engines rather than turbofans.

A bit of searching suggests it is a Boeing C-17 Globemaster III and thus a USAF plane, but it isn't. It is an RAF plane heading for the imminent Air Tattoo at RAF Fairford . Usually when we see or just hear these big planes it indicates a period of international tension when military resources are being deployed. I hope that isn't the case now, but just a bit of countries showing off.
