A brutal day
Backblip.
It looks lovely in this pic and the extra - and the scenery was, but not the weather.
We left the campsite fairly early as Mt Rat's race started at 9am, the car was already reading about 26C in the valley.
He set off and I sat in the shade and prepared for my race start at 11am, not really relishing it but I was there so I was going to start. The first quarter mile was flat and then uphill, fortunately some shade for a while until out in the open and a queue to climb a wall (it was only at this point my GPS caught up with me). More up - walking - then a nice down and a flat section before the undulations started. Although there was some shade it was so hot and a route I ran in Feb became a mostly walk.
Checkoint, food, water, wet sponges and shade in Grasmere and then up a steep hill, full sun, high humidity, no air even walking was very hard. A stop to take the extra of the way we'd come helped and A decision that giving up and going back down wouldn't be much easier than continuing. At least the top of this bit gave a good view, though the next downhill was too rough to run much safely.
A walk down Langdale (apparently 31/32C at the campsite) to another checkpoint and shade. From there it was marginally easier as there was a fair amount of down on good surfaces and I actually overtook a few people and reached the end more than an hour later than originally expected - though everyone was in the same situation.
Mr Rat found his run so airless he bailed at 30k, so he ran 7k more than me and did well to get that far.
Food, back, shower and relax - what a day, I don't think I'll attempt that route again (about a Munro's worth of climbing) even though the scenery was great.
