Moreton Corbet Castle

“Life is a journey that must be travelled no matter how bad the roads and accommodations.”
Oliver Goldsmith
A couple of hours before we were due to visit E, so we headed off to Moreton Corbet Castle, once a fine 16th century mansion, abandoned in the 18th century and said to be haunted by a Puritan who cursed the family. There’s also the interesting St. Bartholomew’s church next door with its’ Corbet family memorials, so plenty to amuse us. We were back in Shrewsbury in time to take   E for lunch nearby, although not too long as she’d had a long day yesterday. Our return journey home, broken by an ice-cream stop and walk around Berrington Hall, got interesting just around Monkland, where the road was closed, supposedly only until 5pm. It was gone 4pm so I asked the guy manning the closure when it would re-open – they were still awaiting a concrete delivery (already two hours late) so no chance of re-opening early. I didn’t fancy returning to Leominster and decided to chance a couple of country lanes using my trusty road atlas and Google Maps. Just wide enough for my car and all went well until about half way, when we became part of a white van convoy through the lanes – I wasn’t the only one to think of it. Even met someone (of several) coming the other way who bemoaned that this was the third time she’d had to reverse, and it was only about a hundred yards from the main road. Straightforward from there, with the beautiful evening sunshine to escort us home.
