Pitmedden Garden
The day began rather wet but thankfully it dried up during the morning as we had decided to head for Pitmedden Garden, a National Trust for Scotland property not far from where we are staying. I had read that it is one of the great formal gardens of Scotland and I was not disappointed. We started with a woodland walk with Bertie, followed by a cup of coffee before venturing into the garden, a feast for the eyes which my words cannot do justice. It is laid out in two terraces, the upper one with less formal flower beds planted in a style resembling a painting. The lower terrace is edged by colourful wide herbaceous borders but it is the four formal rectangular parterres that steal the show. They are outlined by closely-clipped box and yew hedges and divided by grassy paths. The shapes between the hedges are filled with up to 40,000 annual plants raised in the gardens’ own greenhouses each year. I will leave my photos to show some of the delights we enjoyed, suffice to say that it was a grand day out.
