Gaia's Child

Change Is Coming...

It started with a tiny golden egg, one of many, gently deposited on a thin fennel leaf by a female Black Swallowtail butterfly. This life-giving act took place a month or so ago. The egg hatched into an unbelievably small caterpillar (larva) who found a world of fennel to eat. The Cat ate incessantly, molting its skin as it grew into a creature bearing little likeness to its original self. It ate and ate...and when the exact time was right it stopped eating, attached itself to a fennel stem by a thin silk-like thread and waited. It's chrysalis (pupa) formed and therein the 'magic' happened. Almost three weeks later the 'front' of the chrysalis split open and a wet, scrunched-up butterfly emerged. The new Black Swallowtail butterfly had to allow its wings to dry and to pump fluids into them before it was able to fly. This took several hours. Shortly before she flew off, she peed a long stream of urine (I suppose). I could almost hear her sigh of relief! This took me by surprise so I wasn't fast enough to get the shot!   m
