Burnt!

This morning was dry, mostly sunny and warm so A and I were able to complete our walk postponed yesterday by the heavy rain.

We walked around Kelling Heath and onto Weybourne Station.  We noticed that there were no steam trains running between Weybourne and Holt. Later, on our return route across the heath we could see why.  Between the line of burnt earth and the green on the right in this image is a fairly deep railway cutting.  When the trains are travelling down in this cut their chimneys are at just the right height for sparks to fly.  With the tinder dry conditions that we've had the North Norfolk Railway are sensibly only running their vintage diesel engines between Sheringham and Holt at the moment.  According to their website they do have engines in steam at Sheringham. This latest line fire has destroyed quite a lengthy area of the bank alongside the footpath.  Fortunately, it's evident (from previous areas affected by line fires) that the vegetation does recover given time.
