Egret

Every time we pass the Spring Lake Dam, which is almost daily, we see this fellow. The road into town is on the other side of this dam. Today we went for a walk along the dam and back along a little trail at the bottom where I took this picture. The egret was very close and very intent on something other than me.

It's been quite a cool summer and we were still in sweatshirts when we walked after Pilates.

Once again we. found ourselves going to the store when we were hungry, never a good idea, but we're well stocked now.  I commented to John that most of the shoppers in Oliver's are of quite advanced age. He said that most younger people have to be at work, and I suspect that students probably can't afford it! It's getting to the point where we barely can ourselves....I remember the wife of one of John's co-workers telling me back when we were all newlyweds that she spent $50 a week on food and that it would have been less than that but she and her husband both had ulcers and had to be on a prescribed diet. She had majored in Home Economics (does anybody teach that anymore?) But I couldn't even imagine how one even kept track. It just seemed to me that one must eat, and should eat what one enjoys, so I've never really kept track. Now we just hope that the weekly bill is under $300.

Jim came over this afternoon to help us sort through some insurance issues that became increasingly opaque after we had to open a new bank account and couldn't seem to transfer the automatic deposits to it. I can cope either with doing things on the computer or with talking (endlessly) with customer service, but when I have to do both at once, I lose it. I'm amazed at how patiently and politely Jim deals with less than efficient representatives who are no doubt trying just as hard to be patient and polite with us...

A big turkey, Henrietta no doubt, just walked by the door. I think I'd better make sure she isn't eating our ripening figs....
