Angel
Angel is one of the three horses which belong to the riding project. The other two, Dana and Hugo, are much bigger. Angel is a small but opinionated horse. She suits some of the riders perfectly.
This morning I was at the stables shortly after 08:30 to be a volunteer for the day. The event was a family fun day. These days are an opportunity for children and young people who don't have a regular riding or horse care session to come along and spend time with the horses and volunteers.
It's also a chance for non-disabled siblings to spend time at the yard and for parents, grandparents and other carers to relax. As well as riding there are other activities - a sensory stable being the most popular.
I know that trustees have a specific role within the organisation but there are occasions when being involved with the operational side is invaluable. This is one of the times when I can actually be some help. I'm not competent to tack up a horse or lead a rider but I can side walk, make cups of tea, play with children who aren't riding and chat to people. Though I'm a side walker of last resort!
There were two sessions, 10:00-12:00 and 13:00-15:00. Each had four families attending and some had more than one disabled child. It was a wonderful day. Seeing children relax into sitting on a horse always amazes me. Anxiety is often a feature but every child today was happy and I think really took away something positive. I know I did.
I am absolutely exhausted. Setting up, clearing away and being in the arena on a hot and dusty day takes its toll. I wouldn't have missed it though.
