My New Flagpole
I had to take down my old flagpole, it was a round wooden bannister rail that was fitted to assist my Mum and Dad going up the stairs. It was removed, and stored, when we had a Stannah stairlift installed.
I have used it, as a flagpole for many years but removed it because we needed to have the gates, which go out onto the road, replaced. The old gates were fifteen years old and had rotted at ground level.
I filled the gaps that had developed and sanded down the areas, top and bottom, that had become rotten, painted it green, we didn't have any brown ranch paint left, and was ready to re-install on the new gate post.
Marlane thought it would be much better to get a new flagpole, I was reluctant after putting so much work into it but relented. What a huge difference the new flagpole is, it's much higher too despite leaving out three sections of it. Because it is so much higher I can now fly 3x5 feet flags instead of 2x3, even then they used to catch on the Pyracanth thorns!
Got to give it to Marlane, she does have the best ideas.
To install the pole the instructions say to dig a 48 inch deep hole. Put gravel into the bottom and fill to the ground level with concrete. There was no way I was going to be able to dig a hole where it is situated so I got some 50mm pipe brackets from Screwfix and attached the bottom pipe, into which the aluminium pipes are inserted, to the new gate post. Went back and got three more to secure the pole higher up on the gate post, belts and braces maybe but it's more secure.
The new posts should last 15 to 20 years according the man that did the work. I'll be 77 in November so that would make me at least 92 years old and, if it's 20 years, I'd be 97. Somehow I don't think it's going to be my problem!
Here's my old flagpole, at the time celebrating the 105th anniversary of the Royal Air Force (formed 1st April 1918 by Lord Trenchard).
